Background
Navigating GNSS-denied environments
Established in 1936, Roter Precision Instruments is a pioneering force in the geospatial intelligence landscape, renowned for its innovative approach to surveying and mapping. With a focus on integrating cutting-edge technologies, Roter has embraced the Applanix LVX-125 GNSS-inertial POS solution since 2016, enhancing its UAV-based lidar and aerial mapping capabilities. This case study explores how Applanix technology has transformed Roter’s operations, particularly in challenging terrains like the Himalayas and Northeast India.
The dynamic nature of railway environments presents several challenges for mapping, including GNSS signal blockage in tunnels, bridges and urban canyons, which can lead to inaccurate positioning. High-speed data collection from moving trains and survey vehicles requires a real-time, high-frequency positioning system to ensure precision. Additionally, rugged and unstable terrains demand a robust inertial navigation system for continuous positioning. The need for high-precision data is critical for railway inspections, maintenance planning and asset monitoring. Furthermore, gathering this data from a lidar mapping system necessitates a centimeter-level navigation solution.

Solution
Achieving pinpoint tracking accuracy
Roter Precision Instruments chose Applanix for its industry-leading accuracy, robust sensor fusion and ability to deliver precise georeferenced data even in GNSS-denied areas. The LVX-125 GNSS-INS solution offers reliable positioning through IMU integration, maintaining accuracy when GNSS signals are lost. It supports high-precision corrections for post-processing and real-time applications including industry-leading Trimble PP-RTX and RTX data formats, as well as odometry input (DMI), essential for detailed geospatial analysis. The seamless integration with lidar systems ensures precise time synchronization, crucial for accurate point cloud alignment. Its compact and rugged design allows for easy mounting on rail-bound vehicles, drones or mobile mapping systems operating in harsh environments.
A large-scale railway corridor mapping project used Applanix technology to create detailed 3D models of railway tracks, tunnels, bridges and stations. This extensive survey allowed for precise track alignment checks, clearance analysis, and continuous infrastructure monitoring across the rail network. Using POSPac MMS with Applanix’s GNSS-inertial systems and advanced lidar systems, Roter provided very reliable data for tracking rail infrastructure, identifying structural issues and improving maintenance planning.
Results
Staying at the cutting edge of geospatial technology
The integration of Applanix technology resulted in unmatched positioning accuracy and reliability, even in challenging environments such as tunnels and dense forests. The seamless integration with lidar and imaging systems streamlined data acquisition and processing, reducing field and post-processing time while improving overall efficiency. Applanix’s exceptional technical support and continuous innovation ensures that Roter remains at the cutting edge of geospatial technology. Roter Precision Instruments’ collaboration with Applanix has significantly enhanced its geospatial capabilities, enabling the delivery of precise and reliable data for complex projects. This partnership underscores the value of advanced GNSS-inertial solutions in overcoming the challenges of modern geospatial data acquisition, positioning Roter as a trusted leader in the industry.
